The 60-second standup formula
For the first month at my new job, I'd rehearse the entire standup in the shower. Now I follow a tiny three-part script and I'm done in under a minute.
- Yesterday: what I shipped or pushed.
- Today: what I'm about to pick up.
- Blockers: who I need help from.
My go-to templates
"Yesterday I finished the auth refactor and started load-testing the new endpoint."
"Today I'll pair with Mai on the rate limiter."
"I'm blocked on access to the staging database."
I keep these in a sticky note above my monitor. After two weeks I didn't need it anymore.
Phrases I stole from senior engineers
- "Quick context for the group…"
- "I'll take that one offline."
- "Nothing blocking, all green my side."
Try one of these tomorrow. You'll sound calmer than you actually are — that's half the battle.
